Pre-teen Kara Zor-El, Supergirl, has the perfect family vacation planned for her family to the floating city of Argo. Kara’s flans are derailed when the Superman family is invited to a celebration on a seemingly peaceful planet. However, this apparently perfect world holds a dark secret that may just be the key to Kara finding her place in her found family.
What a delightful read! There’s a lot of fun to be had with this breezy read. The characterization is spot-on. I especially enjoyed the writing of Clark and Lois. Clark is appropriately filled with hope and thinks the best fo everyone. Lois' reporter’s instincts cause her to start spotting cracks in the gleaming facade of the planet.
The tone of this graphic novel is decidedly and delightfully campy, embracing and celebrating some of the cornier parts of the superman mythos.
There are dozens of nods to the history of Superman media. My favorite was the Supermobile patterned after the 1979 Corgi ton toy, complete with oversized fists.
The comedy, however, does not distract from the emotional core of this comic: the complexities of family relationships. The family dynamics are surprisingly realistic and compelling. Kara’s frustrations and Clark’s well-intentioned attempts to patch their relationship is very real.
This is also an accurate portrayal of a family trip. I grew up in a small city where my parents knew everyone. Kara’s frustration when Clark gets stuck in an extended conversation with an acquaintance, delaying her plans, is extremely relatable.
While I am not the target demographic for this graphic novel, this was a delight. Supergirl’s Family Vacation is funny and heartwarming, a celebration of the Superman family.
I would have no problem handing this comic to a teenager excited for the upcoming Supergirl movie. It’s funny and heartwarming and real, a celebration of family and the comic book history of the Superman family.
Thank you to DC Comics and NetGalley for providing a copy of this comic for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
